POL "Fredrick Douglas"

This performance was extremely good. The girl's use of dramatization should a very good understanding. She stressed the appropriate words and her voice was very clear. She had a very good "look at me" presence which really helped her physical presence. Also she had very appropriate hand motions that went along well with her dramatization.

From this performance I got that this poem is about segregation. The poem talks about how this man, an African American, was able to do great things and everyone is incredulous. It makes me think that the person who wrote the poem was a very unprejudiced and was trying to influence others to be unprejudiced by using this poem to try and relate to them, but then switch the poem to make them see his point of view.

TKAMB Motif. ~MOCKING BIRD~

You might be wondering how the book TKAMB has enhanced my understanding of motif. Or you might not be. either way, I still plan to tell you. When I was reading Catcher in the Rye I thought motif was whenever that particular item that represented the motif was mentioned. I now realize that it is whenever the action or feeling that the motif symbolizes comes up counts for motif. Such as when Helen Robinson is trying to walk to work, and the Ewells are being awful to her, is an instance of motif. Since Helen is one of the people that represents a 'mocking bird', being awful to her, in that way, represents 'killing' her. (sad huh? if you make fun of and pester an innocent person you are 'killing' them)

So now we move on to what exactly is the mocking bird motif. The mocking bird motif represents any innocent person that is generally nice and is not doing any harm and that it would be like a sin to kill them. There. I hope that explains it. But now how does it add a symbolic level of meaning to the other themes in the novel? Well it adds a symbolic level of meaning to the other themes in the novel by considering with them. When you find an instance of the motif in the book, you can also see one or two (or maybe three) of the themes showing through. Take our example. For instance, when Helen was walking to work and the Ewells were being awful to her you could see the themes of prejudice and of good vs. evil. The Ewells were being awful to her because she was Tom Robinson's wife. Think about this though; why did Bob Ewell decide to take Tom to court? It was because he knew he could win against him because he was black. So right there you can see prejudice. The Ewells were being awful to Helen because she was black. You can also see the theme of good vs. evil. First off you have to ask who represents good, and who represents evil? Then ask were the actions of the Ewells good or evil? Since they were evil that sticks Helen on the side of the good, since she was trying to provide for her family. She there you have it; a conflict between good and evil.

There you have it folks. You have your answers. How has reading To Kill a Mockingbird enhanced your understanding of the term "motif?", and What is the "mockingbird motif" and how does it add a symbolic level of meaning to the other themes in the novel? Ciao! Adios! Sayonara! Au revoir! Arrivederci!

"The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself" -FDR

When I was about 9, I was talking to my grandma Timm about the fact that I was a shy person and didn't like doing certain things because I was afraid that people would think I was immature. My grandma then goes on to tell me that if people didn't want to play with me just because they thought I was immature, then I shouldn't care what their opinion was and all that happy stuff. But then my grandma quotes FDR saying "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Since then it has just always stuck with me.

Ever since then, whenever I am thinking to myself "I don't want to do that! That's so embarrassing!" I remind myself of what my grandma said to me and I think about how you only have one life to live and you might as well live it to the fullest. Ever since my grandma said that I have become much more confident and outspoken. If I don't do something, or say something for myself, no one will. As a result of that, I got to make the speech at my 8th grade graduation.

♥ you grandma!!!

Best Friend Blog

My best friend...hmmm...I have a couple of those. Not really one person I hang out with specifically because my group of best friends all hangout together when we do. When people think of us they don't really think “so-and-so and so-and-so are best friends.” But defiantly one of the most interesting in the group would be my friend Gwen. She's about 5'4" with short brown hair. She doesn't care much about fashion, dressing how she wants to. Sometimes in black pants, other times in colored skinny jeans and always with her black jacket. She used to not care about school but I have conformed her, although it's not the most important thing to her. We have a lot in common, including our obsessiveness over NCIS.

When you first see her, you might think she's a weirdo and a freak, but when you meet her, you know that's exactly true! She prides in the fact that she is different and loves being called weird. Refuses to conform to things that people consider 'normal' and instead doing something completely random just because, is quite common for her. In spite of all this happiness that radiates from her, if you are being stupid, annoying, or rude, her temper will come out. I am quite proud to call this hilarious, extremely extroverted, random, forgetful girl my best friend.

San Juan Islands: 9 years ago

Some of the earliest memories I have are times spent going to the San Juan Islands to look for whales. Specifically when my cousin came to visit us when she was 13. I was five, and to me, my cousin Trisha was one of the oldest, specialist people ever. Thinking about it now, it seems strange since I am a year older than she was and I don't feel like one of those people little kids look up to. You know those people. The ones you followed around and were the most special people ever. Those people where one word from them was like a thousand from the most important king.

Well on that trip I probably annoyed her to death. Wanting to sit by her on the ferry, following her over every rock when all she probably wanted to do was sit and look for whales. Several times I almost fell into a small puddle of seawater trying to go where her long legs could take her and my short ones couldn't. Never really thinking about anything concerning me. Only that I wanted to be like her in every way possible. Whether it be falling in a puddle of ice cold water to follow her, or arguing the day away with my sisters just to sit anywhere near where she was sitting.

Today that cousin live with us. In our used to be dinning room. I still love her in every way possible, but hopefully I don't annoy her to death. =)

Catcher in the Rye: Motif

The question you may ask is why the author used motif so heavily. Because that is totally and completely the eternal question. Well hello! That's what I am here for. The author used motif so heavily because it ties into the theme so much. The theme is a coming of age type thing, and the motif (the red hunting cap) shows up whenever Holden does something immature. When Holden is first leaving Pencey Prep, it mentions his red hat. When he goes to the hotel, it talks about his red hat again. So once you realize what this cap stands for, you can understand certain parts of the book better.

Another reason why the author uses motif so heavily is to lead up to the end. The author uses it a lot so you can first realize what it stands for and what to look for. At the end of the book the author uses it one more time. He uses it to show that even though Holden has gone through all of this, he still has some growing up to do. He uses this to get his point across; that no matter who you are, there is always going to be a kid inside of you.

Outside Reading

I am reading the book “Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger. So far I reall yenjoy the book athough I didn’t exspect this much swearing. So far it has grabed my attention, but that’s because I realy like books about regular people. It’s a very interesting book so far and very laughable. It is comical how childish Holden is because he thinks in such a childish way.

So far from my notes I have found that tone seems to be the most dominate literay element. I know that many people say that irony is the most dominate element, but so far I have not even found on example of irony, so I might be thinking of the wrong thing.

Now for tone, I think the author might be really trying to make a point to as what the theme is. From the books talks I have heard I deffinatly think that the theme is a whole coming of age thing, and so the word choice he uses really potrays how childish he is now.

Speaking of tone, from what I have read the tone is very cynical. Holden is very judgemental of everyone and everything. He has an oppion on everything, and it usually isn’t a very nice one. This also gives another example of how promenet the theme is.

I hope you have ennoyed this (sort-of) blog entry, and I have inlightened you on my views of the book “Catcher in the Rye”.

Reading: The Journey Into Books

The first thing that people learn about me when they met me is that I read non-stop. I always have a book in my bag, hands, car, etc. There is always a book near-by because it is my most common pastime. I am very picky about my books. If the first chapter or two doesn't capture my attention, I usually only read it for a chapter or two more but then stop (unless I have to read it for school). Even if it is one of those books that the first chapter sucks, but the rest of the book is amazing, my mind is still tainted by the memory of that one bad chapter, that I just can't get into the rest of the book (the power of suggestion!) However if I have to read it for school, I press on in spite of everything, but I usually don't enjoy the book after that.

Now onto my reading area. If I can't find a good reading place, I simply don't read. However since I love reading so much, I can usually read in almost any environment, so it isn't often a problem for me. Although I usually can't read when the t.v is on. Strange considering that I can read when people are shouting, with music on, during a football game, during half of a car ride (the other half I am recovering from motion sickness), end even with any annoying sisters poking and prodding me. But not with the t.v on. When that happens I either stop and watch the t.v, or if it is a really good book I go into the other room.

Considering I basically already covered most of my reading style in the paragraph before, this paragraph should be short. I don't like reading aloud in school. I figured I better get that out. I despise it. I read very fast so when we read in class it is one of the most boring things ever (besides waiting for a doctor's appointment, or math). It is so much easier for me if we just get time to read in class. Ok...that's its.

To answer the last question for me is not like asking why we breathe, its more like why we live. Reading is my life, it's my 'thing', its my entertainment, my escape, my buddy, my life. It's hard to explain how much I love reading. Most people think 'wow, she loves to read a lot,' but it's more than that. I can get into the stories. When I'm reading, it feels like I am that main character. I am the one saying those words, doing those things. It may seem a bit childish to do that, I admit, but I can't help it. When I read it just happens, and then I am in another world. It might appeal to me so much because my life is boring, or maybe because I get bored easily, I don't know. But I do know that if books didn't exist........my world would probably implode. :)

I'm not crazy I promise.........................I think

P.S. I really like blue

It's over now......stop wasting your life...go read a book...or something...
